Driving in the snow – what you should know

hilltop garage services horndean

Driving in the snow…

Are you thinking about driving in the snow? It seems that winter has finally arrived. Following a long cold spell, the snow started falling yesterday evening and we awoke this morning to a light covering, but nowhere as bad as some parts of the country. Luckily it seems the local council was well prepared and most roads have been gritted and are relatively free from snow, just a bit of slush here and there.

Before you set off…

So before you venture out on the roads what precautions should you take?

Firstly, don’t drive on the roads unless you really need to. But if you if you really must, then give yourself plenty of time, just because the local roads are clear it doesn’t mean that roads everywhere are. And also, the traffic generally moves more slowly and cautiously, making journey times longer.

Fill up with fuel…

Ensure you have more than enough fuel for your journey, you may get stuck in traffic or snow and not be able to refuel easily. If you do get delayed you’ll need to keep the engine running to be able to use the car’s heater.

Take a map…

Take a map or sat nav. If roads are blocked you may need to make a diversion and if you aren’t familiar with the area you could easily get lost. The AA also advise taking a shovel, blankets, food, and water with you in case you get stranded.

Clear the snow from your car…

Before you set off make sure that you have cleared all the snow from your car, not just the windows, lumps of frozen snow blowing off your car as you travel along are a hazard to other road users and can cause accidents.

Check your lights are working…

Check your lights are working and if visibility is poor use your headlamps on dipped beam, not just for your benefit, but so other road users can see you in plenty of time.

Top up the screenwash reservoir…

Make sure that your windscreen washer reservoir is topped up with plenty of winter screenwash. Don’t use water, it will freeze on the screen and you will have to stop and scrape it off. Check your wipers work and the wiper blades are not frozen to the windscreen.

Prepare your car for winter weather…

Hopefully, you will have checked your car was fit for the winter weather before today. It makes sense to check lights, tyres and fluid levels regularly. A winter service can pay dividends, ensuring your car doesn’t let you down when you need it most.
